The establishment of the State of Israel is regarded by many pious Jews as a miracle from Heaven. The least that anyone can say is that the achievement was well-nigh wondrous. Perhaps some day a genius of the mind and heart will write a book that adequately will record and evaluate everything that happened. This book purports to do much less. It deals with only one small phase of the miracle--the emergence of a constitution in the midst of war.

Apropos is the story told by the distinguished scientist, George Washington Carver, who discovered hundreds of new uses for the peanut. He once asked God to reveal to him the mystery of the universe. "George," said God, "the knowledge of that mystery is reserved to Me alone." Carver then asked God to reveal to him the mystery of the peanut. This God consented to do saying, "George, that is more nearly your size and I will reveal it to you." And so He did.

Perhaps I did dream of writing an inspired book that would reveal the mystery and essence of all that transpired in the early years of the world's youngest democracy. Perhaps I did want to write a comprehensive appreciation of the entire miracle. Instead, my book is limited to one small area--and perhaps even that area was beyond my size. It is, nonetheless, my offering to the men and women whose heroic accomplishments have won the admiration of noble people everywhere. Even when I am critical of what they have done, I seek to be constructive in my analysis. In no way do I intend ever to belittle the over-all grandeur of their historic feats.
