Women Playwrights of Diversity is a reference book designed to highlight briefly the careers and work of selected women playwrights who are writing from and about the ethnic and cultural diversity in America in the 1990s. However, the Latina, Asian American, African American, and lesbian voices are too frequently underrepresented on our stages and in our classrooms. By focusing on these playwrights, both established and emerging, we hope to bring these women to the attention of wider audiences.

This guide is intended as a practical resource for theatre practitioners seeking plays to produce in the professional, community, or academic theatres and will also serve as a supplement for educators teaching dramatic literature or courses in women's studies. Our purpose is to facilitate those producers, scholars, and students who wish to locate, read, write about, and produce plays by women of color and by lesbians.

SCOPE

This book includes playwrights who self-identify as (1) African American, (2) Latina, (3) Asian American, (4) a combination of these ethnicities, and/or (5) lesbian. To make this resource as contemporary and up to date as possible, the majority of a playwright's works had to be written since 1970.

To ensure the inclusion of established as well as emerging playwrights (playwrights whose work was sufficiently developed to warrant their recognition and support by a professional theatre), we solicited recommendations from four sources: (1) theatres that are members of the Theatre Communications Group . . .
