This volume is a reissue of "The Method of Henry James" published by the Yale University Press in 1918, two years after the death of James. The text is identical with that of the original book with the correction of a few misprints. It has been out of print since the time of the Second World War. Whether it is of sufficient interest to call for a reprint is something others will be able to judge better than the author. But there has been a steady small demand for the book since it was not to be had, and many people of good judgment have assured me that it has, in the flood of James literature, its own distinctive merits which make it desirable that it should be made accessible to scholars and serious readers of fiction. And it has the historical interest of being for James "fans" a pioneer work in the field.

It was suggested by the publishers that, considering the large amount of important material, critical and biographical, that has appeared in print since its first publication, what I should offer is a revision of the original work. But that I do not see my way to doing. Any serious revision would involve me in a book quite different in scope, in which my account of James's story- telling technique would be fortified and nourri (as James might say) by consideration of a thousand matters of biographical and psychological interest which have come to light since 1918, and in which advantage might be . . .
