An Introduction to Chinese Art

Excerpt

With every passing year, fresh discoveries make it more difficult to compress the history of Chinese art between the covers of a single manageable book. I am conscious of having left out much that is beautiful and important. This is inevitable. But I have tried to take into account the most significant results of the work of Chinese archaeologists over the past ten years, which has led to the modification or rejection of some long-accepted ideas about early China. This work goes on with unabated vigour, and even as this book goes to press the archaeological picture is being still further altered.

The list of scholars who have influenced me, either through personal contact or through their writings, would be a long one. But I would like to record the debt I owe to Dr. William Cohn and the late Langdon Warner, two modest and inspiring teachers; to Arthur Waley, Benjamin Rowland and Laurence Sickman. To the kindness and wisdom of Chuang Yen and his staff I owe an unforgettable sojourn in the company of the great masterpieces in the National Palace Museum at Taichung. I should like also to thank Arthur Edwards and William Watson, who read part of the manuscript, and John Ayers, who read the whole of it, and made a number of valuable suggestions and corrections.

My gratitude is due to all those individuals and institutions that have supplied me with photographs and kindly permitted their reproduction. The institutions are named in the captions to the plates. Among the generous scholars and collectors who have helped in this way I would like particularly to thank the following: M. Sakamoto, Dr. Li Chi, Dr. John Pope, Professor Howard S. Hansford, Laurence Sickman, Dennis Cohen, Dr. Richard Fuller, Sir Percival and Lady David, Professor Osvald Sirén, Walter Hochstadter, Professor Mizuno Sei-ichi, Mr. and Mrs. Myron S. Falk Jr., Sir Alan and Lady Barlow, Mrs. Walter Sedgwick, Dr. Franco Vannotti, Dr. Richard Edwards, Huang Man-ssu, Ch'en Ching-chao, Robert P. Griffing Jr., A. Hellström . . .
