A Short Introduction to the Economy of Latin America

Excerpt

In 1951 Chatham House began the publication of a series of monographs dealing with the history, the politics, and the social and economic life of the several republics of Latin America. Eight volumes in this series have so far been published. Others are in preparation, and it is hoped, in due course, to cover in this way all the countries of the Latin American area. The Institute has also published, as a bibliographical pendant to the series, Latin American History: A Guide to the Literature in English, by Professor R. A. Humphreys, and, as a further supplementary work, it has in preparation a study of the Organization of American States.

A general survey of the economy of the Latin American area as an introduction to the series has long seemed desirable. Accordingly, Professor F. Benham was asked to put together a short book on these lines. This, with the help of Mr. H. A. Holley, who has written the section in Part II, he has now done. The resulting work is not designed as an exhaustive or profound study of the Latin American economy but as a first introduction to it for the reader who wishes to Visit the Latin American countries or later to study their affairs more intensively.

The publication of this introductory volume is a suitable opportunity for the expression of the Institute's gratitude to Professor R. A. Humphreys, who has throughout taken a most active part in helping to direct the series, and to those many others who have assisted with advice or in other ways. Among these there should be mentioned in particular Mr. David G. Blelloch, Dr. G. A. Butland, Mr. J. A. Camacho, Mr. Clifton J. Child, Mr. R. J. D. Evans, Mr. W. O. Galbraith, Mr. Reay Geddes, Sir Kenneth Grubb, Mr. H. A. Holley, Mr. David Huelin, Mr. George Pendle, Commander J. C. Read, R.N. (Ret.), Mr. R. V. Low, and Mr. F. C. Waddams.

It is an opportunity also for the Institute to record its thanks to all those who generously gave it their financial support when it first began to plan a survey of the Latin American area, namely: Agar Cross & Co.; The Bank of London and South America; Benn Brothers; Bovril Ltd.; Dunlop Rubber Company; Electrical and Musical Industries; English Electric Company; Forestal Land, Timber and Railways; Harrods (Buenos Aires); ImperialChemical Industries . . .
