This book is a unique collection of essays, written entirely by authors from the former Yugoslavia, searching for a better understanding of the events that led to the calamitous disintegration of the Yugoslav federation. It is by no means an authoritative account or chronicle of the war, which is still raging, nor is it an exclusively academic treatment of the subject divorced from the pain and suffering that some of the authors themselves have experienced. For the peoples of the region, it is intended as a much needed dialogue aimed at understanding the mixture of forces, events and personalities that exploded into such a cataclysm, and at the same time an opportunity to reflect on the way out of this gloom to a brighter and more prosperous future.
