Soviet Science

Excerpt

In this book I have not attempted an exhaustive examination of the entire history of Soviet science--one author could hardly master the diversity of specialized knowledge which would be required for such a task. Nor have I tried to present a condensed account of the main events in the development of Soviet science (with international science as a background for comparison) in the manner of a professional historian. This would be an appro7priate task for groups of official Soviet historians of science or the Institute of the History of Science, which is within the framework of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Many books have already been written on this subject, both specialized monographs as well as works published to commemorate various important jubilee occasions. One of the last such volumes--the official history of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR--recently appeared to mark the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Russian Academy (1).
