The Contours of Church and State in the Thought of John Paul II

Excerpt

This volume is a careful and comprehensive examination of the thought and actions of Pope John Paul II concerning church-state relations. A distinguished church historian and author of a wide range of significant studies in church history, George Huntston Williams brings to this volume years of personal acquaintance with the subject of this study and with the history of the church in Poland. The author was one of the few persons who predicted the elevation of Karol Cardinal Wojtyla of Cracow to pontiff and chief pastor of the Roman Catholic Church. The author's The Mind of John Paul II: Origins of His Thought and Action (New York: Seabury Press, 1981) has been widely praised for its erudition and insightful analyses.

Born in Wadowice, Poland, on 18 May 1920, Wojtyla, following his ordination in 1946, received a doctorate in divinity and held the chair of ethics at the Catholic University of Lublin. Named bishop in 1958, archbishop of Cracow in 1963, and cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1967, Wojtyla became pope on 16 October 1978. From its beginning, his pontificate has assumed a special significance for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. The first non-Italian pope in 455 years, the first pontiff from a communist nation, and already the most widely traveled pope in all of history, John Paul II's thought on church and state and his relations with various nation-states and current political movements amply warrant the special attention given this study by the author.

The two principal essays of this volume were originally published in Journal of CHURCH and STATE. In addition to these essays, a "Bibliographical Essay" has been especially prepared for this volume. This monograph is published in order to serve an even wider readership and to make available the subject of this study in one volume.
