Of works on the rearing of children there is no end. This is yet another. How does it differ from the rest?

To begin with, this book tells something of the actual rearing of a sample of almost 600 children. It is not a book which gives advice to parents or which complains about their inadequacies. It simply reports what they do.

Even more important, this book shows that a new and evolving style of child rearing is in use in at least one American city, Detroit, and suggests why we may expect this change in methods of training children to appear more generally among families in the United States. The study described here also tries to locate some of the sources of these new developments . . .
