Excerpt

This book is a collection of selected papers about nonverbal and vocal behavior during clinical and investigative, psychological interviews. They are some of the studies conducted by students, colleagues, and myself over the past 35 years. More than half of the papers have never been published, although most of them were presented at scientific meetings. The previously published papers have appeared in widely scattered places, often as chapters in books. This volume makes available for the first time a fairly complete presentation of a coherent body of work.

The psychotherapeutic interview is the point of departure and the arena of investigation for most of these studies. We did, however, turn to experimental, investigative interviews when we wished to test certain hypotheses that had arisen in the course of the research. In general, we have tried to deal with basic issues, rather than with matters pertaining to psychotherapeutic technique. Thus, our studies of nonverbal behavior are concerned with general processes of such behavior as it occurs in therapeutic interviews, rather than with ways in which the therapist might put such knowledge to use in facilitating the therapy. I very rarely commented to my patients on their nonverbal behavior; never about matters under investigation. Likewise, much of our work with vocal behavior has been concerned with the development of a method for measuring the patients concurrent anxiety in interviews that might be put to many investigative uses, rather than with how a therapist might put such a method to use in his daily, clinical practice.

This volume, therefore, is addressed primarily to those behavioral scientists concerned with basic questions about nonverbal and vocal behavior-- questions about their nature and about how their study can facilitate research . . .
