I owe a considerable debt of gratitude to all those who stimulated my interest in the drama and literature of the Restoration and the eighteenth century and who encouraged my research, especially the late Professor Douglas Grant, Professor A. Norman Jeffares, Professor Cecil Price, and Professor Roger Sharrock. In a different way, I am greatly indebted to the various inhabitants and frequenters of the old Research Room in the School of English at the University of Leeds where I began work on the drama of the period, particularly Margaret Clayton, Lloyd Fernando, Geoffrey Hill, Jack Healy, Brendan Kennelly, and Jon Silkin. I should like to thank Professor T. W. Craik and Professor J. R. Watson for their interest in this book when I was preparing the final draft and for reading the typescript with an eye for improvements. The financial assistance I have received from the Staff Travel and Research Fund of the University of Durham to enable me to work in London has been an enormous help, and publication of the book in its present form would not have been possible without the support of the University's Publication Board; I am deeply grateful for this support. In assisting me to find suitable contemporary prints for inclusion in this book, the staff of the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum were most obliging, and the prints are reproduced by courtesy of the Trustees of the British Museum, the British Library and the Mansell Collection. In order to avoid a deluge of endnotes, I have refrained from providing detailed page and line references for every quotation from the dramatic texts mentioned in this book. Except where otherwise noted, as in the case of plays by the principal authors under discussion, quotations from Restoration and Augustan plays are normally taken from the first, and often only, edition.
