Emile Ollivier and the Liberal Empire of Napoleon III

Excerpt

This book is not a biography of Emile Ollivier but a study of his conduct as a politician and of his work as chief minister of Napoleon III's liberal empire. It could not have been written but for the kindness of Madame Geneviève Troisier, who very generously allowed me unrestricted access to her father's papers. I should like to express my gratitude to her and also to Madame Anne Troisier de Diaz. I wish to thank in addition Mr. Raymond Carr, Mr. James Joll, and Mr. Steven Watson whose advice and constructive criticism have been extremely helpful; Dr. W. C. Costin, M. Louis Girard, M. Pierre Guiral, and Professor and Mrs. Kenneth Kirkwood for suggestions and comments from which I have derived great benefit; Mrs. J. Dean for her invaluable secretarial assistance; and not least the archivists and librarians who guided me through their collections and obtained obscure works for me.

I dedicate the book to my old tutors at Christ Church and to the Warden and Fellows of St. Antony's College, in deep gratitude.
