In several previous volumes of The Lakeside Classics, the Publishers have presented to their readers narratives dealing with the dangers and hardships of overland journeys to the Far West. The volume published last year presented an account of such a journey to California by a group of "forty- niners."

This year California continues its celebration of the one hundredth anniversaries of the discovery of gold and of its becoming the thirty-first State. Although relatively little has been written of the effects of these events on the social and economic life of the nation, there is a wealth of material depicting life in California one hundred years ago.

The full texts of some of the contemporary narratives are being republished by others. For our volume this year we have selected a series of extracts from famous contemporary descriptions of various aspects of life in California during the Gold Rush period.
