Since world attention focused on the Sino-Soviet rift, a fast-growing body of literature on various aspects of the issue has appeared. Yet there are very few works that intensively discuss the economic relations between the Communist giants I believe that one of the root causes of the current polemics is economic.

During my studies of the economic developments in Mainland China under the Communist regime, my attention was drawn to Soviet economic pressures on Peking by a Chinese official report issued in June, 1957. The report stated that 3,000 Chinese students specializing in the Russian language could not be assigned work because there had been a great reduction of Russian experts working on the mainland. The events following this news -- such as the complete suspension of Soviet financial aid in 1958 and the radical measures of the Big Leap Forward and commune system adopted by Mao Tse-tung in the same year -- further convinced me that Sino-Soviet economic relations were becoming increasingly strained. My observations appeared in several articles published in Chinese and Japanese in Hong Kong and Tokyo, and later incorporated in my book: Communist China: Its Situation and Prospects, also published in Chinese and Japanese in Hong Kong and Tokyo in 1959. The present study stems from many of my earlier observations and adds an account of the developments of the past five years.

This study discusses in de four integral aspects of Sino-Soviet economic relations from the inception of the Peking regime in 1949 to the end of 1963. The first involves investigation of Soviet assistance to China's industrialization program, with particular emphasis on the supply of equipment and technical aid.
