In selecting last year's volume of the Lakeside Classics the publishers chose a narrative the scene of which was laid in the southeastern part of the country. This was a departure from the pattern established in the preceding forty-odd years and although the favorable reception given Milford Memoir was very gratifying, the publishers have again exercised their freedom of choice and returned for the volume this year to the West of the Rocky Mountains and for editor to Dr. Quaife whom Dr. J. Christian Bay calls "that grand Western man."

We believe our readers will find "Uncle Dick" Wootton's story both entertaining and informative. Most of his life was spent in southeastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico and spanned the years during which he saw the changes from an almost primitive to a fairly settled status. He saw the administration of justice change from the simplest direct form to the more orderly, if not more effective, civilized procedure. He saw settled communities grow on plains where he had hunted the buffalo and along streams where he had set his beaver traps.
