Excerpt

This book gathers together a selection of Henri Matisse's graphic work produced during a half century. It does not include drawings nor does it attempt a catalogue raisonné of his prints.1 The survey, however, offers a comprehensive review of his work in the many print media he chose to use--drypoint, etching, lithography, linoleum cut, monotype and aquatint. It also reproduces pages from those books Matisse illustrated with original prints. His illustrations for--Jazz, a brilliant creation of his last years, were conceived to be executed by craftsmen. They are not in any strict sense "originals" but since Matisse directed their entire production they are included here.
