Each of the studies contained in this book is practically a separate article, more or less independent of the others. I have brought together here all that I have written about French-classical tragedy, whether previously published or not, that each part of it may be read in connection with the rest, and that some treatment of the whole subject-- of the major and also the chief minor dramatists--may be found in a single volume. None of the chapters on these lesser playwrights has appeared earlier, and those chapters constitute more than half of the book.
