Excerpt

This edition of The Unnatural Combat was undertaken as a thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Princeton University. In the course of the work I have become indebted to many people. Chief among them is Professor T. M. Parrott, under whose direction the work was done and to whom I am indebted both for interesting me originally in the subject of the Elizabethan drama and for friendly criticism and advice.

I am also grateful to Professor Robert Shafer of the University of Cincinnati for looking up some information for me at the Bodleian Library; to Professors T. W. Baldwin of the University of Illinois and J. Q. Adams of Cornell University for suggestions in connection with the dating of the play; to Mr. Robert Ball of Princeton for checking the stage history; and finally to the library staffs of Princeton, Yale, and Indiana University for most courteous help in securing material.
