THE ABRAMS LECTURE SERIES is financed by a grant from the Exxon Education Foundation in memory of the late Frank W. Abrams, former chairman of the board of the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), the predecessor of Exxon, and former chairman of the board of trustees of Syracuse University.

A member of Syracuse University's Class of 1912, Mr. Abrams was a life-long leader in support of higher education. He was a founder of the Council for Financial Aid to Education, chairman of the Ford Foundation's Fund for the Advancement of Education, and a trustee for the Alfred E. Sloan Foundation.

Mr. Abrams was one of the key pioneers who awakened American business, both through education and landmark legal precedents, to the need for financial support by business for private higher education. It was a contribution by Mr. Abrams, the importance of which cannot be overemphasized, which makes it particularly appropriate that this lecture series be presented in his name.

Special thanks are due the members of the Abrams Lecture Series Planning Committee, headed by Guthrie S. Birkhead, Dean of the Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Working with Dean Birkhead are Michael O. Sawyer, Vice-Chancellor of the University and Professor of Constitutional Law; L. Richard Oliker, Dean of the School of Management; Richard D. Schwartz, Ernest I. White Professor of Law; and Robert L. Payton, President, Exxon Education Foundation.
