At the age of eleven, thanks to my father, I acquired the entrepreneurial spirit.

My dad did not believe in giving allowances to his children and so provided my brother and me with a list of chores for which we were paid "fees." Mowing the lawn, raking leaves, shoveling snow, washing the family car, pressing one of his two suits, each carried a credit of twenty-five cents. Then, in order to encourage our accumulation of wealth, he required us at each month-end to submit a statement of earnings for that month, whereupon he provided a "bonus" of twenty-five cents for each dollar earned from sources both inside and outside the home. With funds thus derived from domestic chores, plus my newspaper route, and commissions earned by selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door in the small Canadian city where we lived, by my twelfth birthday I was able to amass a fortune of $100. My father suggested that I invest this sum in the shares of a copper-mining company trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. A stockbroker neighbor gave me the positive assurance that this investment would make me rich!

For Christmas of 1928 I received an unusual present from a relative. It was a hand-operating printing press capable of printing personal stationery and business cards. It came with an assortment of types and inks in various colors. Now I was really in business, soliciting friends and neighbors for orders at prices . . .
