I wish to thank the Master and Fellows of Balliol College for making it possible for me to have a sabbatical term, during which the greater part of this book was drafted. I also thank the Leverhulme Trustees for a grant towards my expenses during this sabbatical term.

I am deeply indebted to Miss D. M. Barratt for allowing me to read, and to quote from, her admirable Oxford D.Phil. Thesis, The condition of the Parochial Clergy from the Reformation to 1660, with special reference to the Dioceses of Oxford, Worcester and Gloucester, and for much helpful advice. Chapter V draws heavily on Dr. Barratt's work, which I hope will be published in the near future. Mr. M. E. James of Durham University and Mr. V. G. Kiernan of Edinburgh University read the typescript and made many valuable suggestions. I am also grateful for help in various forms to Dr. G. E. Aylmer, Mr. J. E. Bowle, Professor V. H. Galbraith, Mrs. D. M. Garman, Dr. R. H. Hilton, Mr. A. Jenkin, Professor Sir John Neale, Miss Eirwen Owen, Dr. Valerie Pearl, Mr. J. Safford, Mrs. Joan Simon, Miss Doreen Slatter, Mr. L. Stone, Mr. P. Styles, Miss Dona Torr and Miss Anne Whiteman; and to Mr. John Keegan, who generously helped with the proofs. Greatest of all is my debt to my wife. I alone however am responsible for the errors which remain. In a book which covers a good deal of ground, and uses the research of others as well as my own, I have tried to acknowledge debts where I am conscious of them. But there must be many places where I have benefited from discussions with friends and pupils and have failed to say so: I hope they will forgive me.

In all quotations, though not in titles of books, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation have been modernized.
