Religious Liberty in Latin America?

Excerpt

I was born in Argentina and have lived nearly all my life in South America. I came to the United States in June of 1942 to engage in an extensive program of addresses on Latin America and the Good Neighbor policy. Upon beginning the program which had been outlined, I confronted almost immediately the issue raised by the Roman Catholic campaign against Protestant missionary work in Latin America. This issue could not be dodged. During thirty-five years of active religious and educational work in South America my relations with Roman Catholics have been most friendly and even happy. Some of my firmest support has come from devoted Catholics in that southland who have the intellectual acumen to realize that there are values in Protestantism that greatly benefit their countries. I have always disliked controversy and have not found it necessary in my work in Latin America. But here in the United States I was suddenly face to face with a campaign that was almost as brazen as it was unfair. Statements in the American press so intemperate, even insulting to Protestantism and certainly untrue in many respects, had aroused my audiences and I was compelled to yield to their demand that I answer their questions and meet their interest in this matter.

During a year of constant travel, addressing audiences that have totaled tens of thousands, in colleges and universities, churches and luncheon clubs, speaking sometimes two and three times a day, at Chautauqua, in Florida where eighteen cities were visited, I was impressed with the aroused interest of the American public in this claim of the Roman Catholic hierarchy to religious monopoly in Latin America. I came to this country an "appeaser" of the Roman Catholic Church. I am still a sincere admirer of much that is worthy in that great Church. But my American audiences drove me out of my irenic position.
