Memoirs of a Monticello Slave

Excerpt

The reminiscences printed here were taken down in the 1840's by Charles Campbell, the Virginia historian, from the verbal account of a slave who had lived at Monticello from 1775 until two years before Jefferson's death. They were first printed in 1951 in a scholarly edition with introduction and notes by Dr. Rayford W. Logan, which was sold out within a year of its first issue.

The present popular edition is intended to meet the growing demand for this classic.
