This book represents the attempt of a professional soldier to orientate American public opinion in respect to offensive warfare. It has often been necessary for the author to diverge sharply from the judgments of our "military experts" and to point out fallacies in arguments which we had hitherto regarded as irrefutable. It has also been necessary to submit to a critical examination the war effort of the European democracies. However, this has been done in the firm belief that in order to defeat the Axis, we must learn every lesson which this war holds for us, even though such lessons emphasize the mistakes of our oracles and the strategic blunders of our allies.

The same thing goes for the victories of our enemies. It will not be sufficient for us to know that Hitler has conquered thus far because he possessed a superior army. We must learn why his army was superior. We must learn chapter and . . .
