A writer who should attempt to show the influence of Roman private life upon the modern world would have to unite a specialist's familiarity with antiquity with a wide knowledge of the intervening centuries through which that influence might be traced. In addition, he ought to have spent at least one normal lifetime in each of the Latin countries. In these, at any rate, survivals are more easily detected and their history more definitely determined. Now, inasmuch as the editors' chance of finding a Methuselah possessed of such a combination of erudition and experience seemed somewhat remote, they had to seek as their alternative someone who had specialized in the field of private antiquities and yet would have the complaisance, or, if you will, the temerity to undertake a task of only less effrontery than that which the scheme of the Series seems primarily to demand.
