In all our years of advising, teaching, and research in field of family relationships, we have found few subjects more frequently raised by puzzled men and women than the problem of interfaith marriages. Again and again we have been asked advice by husbands and wives; again and again we have heard from young people of the difficulties they had as children in homes where the parents were of different religious faiths.

It was to meet the questions and problems of such people that we decided to write this book. We have been gathering case histories for a quarter of a century and more, collecting information from parents, relatives, children, and grandchildren as well as from the couples themselves. Many of these family histories cover twenty or more years; some cover a generation and longer; in a few cases, four generations are included.

The present book is squarely based on this first-hand case material. We are concerned only that the reader should see for himself, from actual examples, how important a part religion can play in the whole way of life of an individual and how difficult marital adjustment can be with a partner of widely different religious background.
