Excerpt

The following lectures are here printed substantially as they were delivered in Michaelmas Term, 1944. There has been some slight rearrangement of the material and, in view of the fact that I am engaged on a book covering wider aspects of the period, some paragraphs which seem to belong more appropriately to the forthcoming volume have been omitted.

Unfortunately Mr. C. T. Flower elaborate and important introduction to the Curia Regis Rolls, published by the Selden Society as the volume for 1944, was only issued to subscribers in July 1945, after these lectures had gone to press. I have therefore not had the opportunity of profiting by this valuable commentary. Mr. Sidney Painter Studies in the History of the English Feudal Barony (The Johns Hopkins Press, Baltimore, 1943), which deals with some questions here discussed, also reached me too late to avail myself of it.

I have received much help and encouragement from many friends to whom I wish to express my deep sense of gratitude. Particularly I should like to thank Professor and Mrs. Stenton who, not only placed with rare generosity their unrivalled knowledge of the period at my service, but were also kind. enough to read the lectures in manuscript.
