Excerpt

Among my many debts, there are two especially that I wish to acknowledge here. I first studied Ezra Pound's poetry under the supervision of Dr Hugh Kenner of the University of California. He has not read this book and would doubtless disagree with much that I have written; yet it certainly owes much to his sympathetic and informed instruction. Dr Donald Davie, Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, has read the book--several times. Having said this, I should also point out that the nature of the subject precludes any tidy work of impeccable scholarship; nevertheless, in so far as this study of Pound's poetry is readable and accurate, it is so largely because of Dr. Davie's criticism. It is only just to add that he disagrees with many of my interpretations and judgments: such disagreement does not, perhaps, say much for my good sense; but it says a great deal for Dr Davie's tact and generosity.

I am also grateful to Dr M. L. Rosenthal of New York University and Mr M. J. C. Hodgart of Pembroke College, Cambridge. They read an earlier version of this study and made many useful suggestions for its improvement. I should also like to mention the indirect, yet by no means negligible, help I have had from Professor Philip Edwards of Trinity College, Dublin, and from Dr Marvin Mudrick and Dr Homer Swander of the University of California.

To the Trustees of the Edward John Noble Foundation (New York) I wish to express my sincere gratitude. Without the research fellowship which they awarded me, I should have been unable to complete this work.

I acknowledge the permission of Mr Ezra Pound to reproduce copyright material from his poetry and prose. I also make grateful acknowledgment as follows: to Mr Gordon Leff, for permission to quote from his Medieval Thought from Saint Augustine to Ockham . . .
