A year has elapsed since I wrote "The New World of Islam." It has been an eventful year. Throughout the Near and Middle East the tide of events has run swift and strong. In India the forces of Hindu and Mohammedan discontent, welded by the mystical power of "Mahatma" Gandhi, not only threaten British rule in India itself but have produced notable effects in the Near East as well. It is Indian protests more than anything else which have caused Britain to alter her policy toward Turkey and which have made the Treaty of Sevres a "scrap of paper." Mustapha Kemal and his Turkish Nationalist government at Angora have apparently won a sweeping victory. Asia Minor, the Turkish homeland, is not to be parcelled out among the European Powers. The Turk is not to be expelled from Europe, since Constantinople with its land approaches is evidently to be in Turkish hands.

In North Africa, as in Asia, important events have taken place. The swelling tide of Egyptian unrest has evoked from England an offer of qualified independence. The French North African possessions of Algeria and Tunis, while still outwardly peaceful, are astir with discontent. In Tripoli, Italian rule has been openly challenged by a native uprising, while Spain is hard pressed in Morocco by a rebellion which has annihilated a large Spanish army in the worst colonial disaster suffered by a European . . .
