The Aristotelian Society of Marquette University each year invites a scholar to deliver a lecture in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas. Customarily delivered on the Sunday nearest March 7, the feast day of the Society's patron saint, these lectures are called the Aquinas lectures.

In 1956 -- the year of the University's 75th Anniversary -- the Academic Vice- President of the University suggested that the Aristotelian Society invite the director of the Marquette department of philosophy, Fr. Gerard Smith, S.J., to deliver the lecture. The Society now has the pleasure of recording that lecture, given March 18 in the Brooks Memorial Union.

Father Smith was born April 25, 1896 at Sioux City, Iowa. He took his A.B. at St. Louis University in 1919 and his A.M. in 1921. He studied at Ore Place, Hastings, England, at Fourvière, Lyons, France . . .
