Excerpt

These lectures have been somewhat changed since delivery and, obviously, enlarged. I wish to express my gratitude to the Macmillan Company and the Cambridge University Press for permission to make use of some ideas in my SHAKESPEARE STUDIES (1927) and in my ART AND ARTIFICE IN SHAKESPEARE (1933); and to Messrs. Harcourt, Brace and Company for permission to quote a few lines from Mr.Murry SHAKESPEARE (1936).

It remains only to express my pleasure in the hospitality and responsiveness of both faculty and students at Toronto; above all in that of the scholar and teacher in whose honour the lectureship was founded. Well for an institution and for a country where learning, critical sanity, and personal qualities like his are so justly recognised!
