Excerpt

No more than a few years after the publication of the Dutch edition of Aruba Past and Present both a Dutch reprint and an English translation proved desirable, which cannot but be a source of great satisfaction to the author, not least because of the great interest in Aruba thus evinced. This English edition comprises the complete text of the Dutch original, brought into agreement, where necessary, with developments after the manuscript was finished. A supplementary chapter about Aruban events in recent years has been added. As the notes and references appended to the first edition can only be profitably used by readers of Dutch, they have been omitted in this.

The author's sincere gratitude is due to his translator, Mr. J.A. Verleun of Amsterdam, who was found willing to undertake the anything but inconsiderable task of preparing the present volume.
