Excerpt

The subject of the influence of the Latin elegiac poets upon English lyric poetry of the seventeenth century prior to the Restoration was suggested to me in 1927 by Dr. John W. Draper. The problem has necessitated some familiarity with the works of the Elegists, and the reading of all available lyric poetry published between 1600 and 1660. The method of presentation adopted has required somewhat extended quotations both of English poems and of Latin parallels. The results indicate an undoubted influence of the Latin Elegists upon seventeenth century English poetry, particularly upon the verse of Robert Herrick.

The reading for this thesis was done chiefly at the Widener Library of Harvard University. I have also used the Bangor Public Library and the Library of the University of Maine.

I am deeply indebted to Dean George Davis Chase, to whose profound knowledge of Latin literature I owe whatever understanding I have of the Elegists, and without whose friendly interest and guidance I should have had the greatest difficulty in dealing with the Latin phases of my subject. My thanks are also due to Dr. Milton Ellis, who, during the absence of Dr. Draper, directed the first year's work upon this thesis. To Dr. John W. Draper, the director of this thesis, whose stimulating guidance and unfailing kindness have made possible the completion of this work, I particularly wish to express my sincere appreciation.
