Choosing Equality: The Case for Democratic Schooling

Excerpt

Choosing Equality is the product of a two-year project developed by The New World Foundation to advance equity issues and democratic values in the national debate over public school reform. This work was prompted by a deep concern that the prevailing trend in school improvement--often labeled the "excellence movement "--fundamentally ignores the need of those most damaged by failing schools, particularly low-income and minority children. Further, this work reflects concern that our schools are becoming increasingly devalued as public institutions essential to the quality of citizenship and community in this society. Our purpose, then, has been to examine the implications of the excellence movement and to renew the case for equality as an irreducible condition of excellence in the mission of public education.

Choosing Equality is a collaborative effort, involving not only the five authors but also a wide range of educators and school advocates with long-standing commitments to democratic education. We would like to thank more than forty . . .
