FOR Americans the Liberty Bell is a symbol, a sacred relic. It is the only one they possess, except the flag, of such universal appeal. A symbol may be defined as a visible sign of something invisible. Liberty is an abstract quality which cannot be graphically portrayed. Yet everyone wants it. So the Liberty Bell is treasured by the nation as a symbol of the liberty that has already been attained and of the future liberty yet to be realized.
