It was just before curtain time at the opening of The Night of the Iguana . I was sitting in the fourth row center with Mr. Lewin Wright Croft, father-in-law of my younger son Dakin. Mr. Croft was getting great delight out of attending his first Broadway premiere and being introduced to some of Tom's friends, including Helen Hayes, Lillian Gish and Carson McCullers, who came over to wish us well.

"Where's Tom?" I asked Dakin, who was sitting near us with Joyce, his wife.

"He's pacing up and down somewhere," said Dakin.

I hadn't seen Tom all evening. I know he is always nervous opening night, the desperate hours during which he finds out if he has reached the hearts of drama critics and public. He suffers over the premiere of each play as though it were the first.

Mr. Croft and I talked together excitedly until we were " sh-shhed " by those around us as the lights slowly dimmed. The . . .
