Most of the essays in this book are printed here for the first time, but a few have appeared before. The Challenge of the Greek was delivered as a National Lecture in December 1935 under the auspices of the B.B.C., to whom I am indebted for permission to reprint it. I am similarly indebted to the Classical Association for leave to reprint the Presidential Address of 1938 on Purpose in Classical Studies. The theme of each of these two papers is, in essence, the same, but the reader will perceive a difference in treatment; the one audience was to consist of classical scholars who, I was told, would not be a majority in the other. They were not, as I found; but it was a pleasure to hear from a Cambridge bus-conductor and a bookbinder of their interest in my "talk". The pages on Virgil appeared in the American Classical Journal; the article on Erasmus in The Times; and that on Iced Water in The Cambridge Review. My thanks are due to all three. Here and there something or other has been relevant to more than one of the subjects treated; but, as this is a book of essays and not a consecutive treatise, it seemed needless to multiply cross-references and simpler to let the fact stand where it seemed wanted. The proofs have been read by Mr R.J. Getty of St John's College and I am grateful to him.

Varro, in his book on Country Life, tells his readers that the approach of his eightieth year hints to him to "truss up his fardels". I am not quite so old yet; but it is forty years since the Cambridge University Press published my first book, which I wrote when I was young audaxque juventa in Canada. It is pleasant to have the same imprint on my extremum hunc Arethusa.

A last paragraph, but for my friends alone. From time to time of late it has been suggested to me that I should write an autobiography. I have been reluctant to do this; I cannot . . .
