Education in the USSR: A Collection of Readings from Soviet Journals - Vol. 1

Excerpt

This collection of writings from Soviet sources is designed to provide a comprehensive picture of the goals, content and methods of the Soviet educational system as it functions today. At the same time, it is hoped that the reader will gain a greater understanding of the general direction and results of Soviet education over the past forty-five years, as well as of the major tendencies in the post-Stalin period.

The materials have been drawn from the translation journal SOVIET EDUCATION, which has been published monthly by International Arts and Sciences Press since November 1958. The original Soviet journal sources are listed on the following page. It is primarily in these journals that Soviet educators discuss their problems and exchange experiences and opinions. The reader of EDUCATION IN THE USSR, therefore, is actually listening in on this absorbing discussion as it took place in the years 1958-1963.

A word about terminology. The articles have been reproduced as they originally appeared in SOVIET EDUCATION over a five-year period. Some terms have been rendered into English differently at different dates, reflecting an evolution in the editors' and translators' conception of the "right word" for a particular term or phrase. This fact, however, does not impair the essential clarity or accuracy of the text.

The editor is responsible for the selection of articles as well as for the editing of those articles which appeared in SOVIET EDUCATION since he became its editor in July 1961. Naturally, all views expressed are those of the Soviet authors.
