Vessels for the Ancestors: Essays on the Neolithic of Britain and Ireland in Honour of Audrey Henshall

Synopsis

"In this volume a group of distinguished prehistorians present the latest work on the Neolithic of the north and west of Britain and Ireland, areas with some of the most impressive monuments and material culture in north-west Europe. The contents are presented in four sections: funerary studies; megalithic art; artefact studies; and regional studies. Traditional scholarly presentations are combined with contemporary theoretical approaches and methodological discussion. A substantial quantity of hitherto unpublished material is incorporated. The papers serve to transform our understanding of the Neolithic of these areas, and are guaranteed to stimulate lively discussion. Contributors include not only well-known archaeologists such as Richard Bradley, Roger Mercer and George Eogan, but also younger scholars active in contemporary Neolithic studies, such as Ann MacSween, Rosamund Cleal, Gabriel Cooney and Mark Edmonds." Excerpt

This book is presented, with affection and gratitude, to Audrey Henshall on the occasion of her 65th birthday. Eschewing personal tributes in favour of a set of essays which it is hoped will be of interest to her, the Editors pass on the good wishes of all her friends, colleagues and admirers.

The papers presented here have all been stimulated, directly or indirectly, by Audrey's many and substantial contribution to prehistoric archaeology. The accent is unashamedly and appropriately Scottish, although essays concerning English, Welsh and Irish material, sparked by her funerary and ceramic work, are also included. The range of topics covered in the volume is witness to Audrey's broad-ranging interests, and we would not wish to embarrass her by listing her many and varied publications here; the numerous references to her works made within the text speak for themselves.

To Audrey Happy Birthday . . .
