Excerpt

This book is intended as an introduction to the philosophy which has lately established its place in the record of mankind. To deal both comprehensively and justly with strictly contemporary thought is an ira- possible task. If I have seemed to slight many notable living philosophers, this does not imply that I regard them as unimportant, but only that I hesitate to anticipate the verdict of history.

I have aimed to set forth each philosophy with sympathetic understanding, rather than to argue my own opinion about it. I hope that through this brief exposition, and through the many references to their works, my readers may find an access to the philosophers themselves--including philosophers of continental Europe as well as of English-speaking countries.
