Many people have helped in many ways in the making of this collection. It is my privilege here to record my obligations: to my wife, Eleanor W. Blau, whose contribution lies not only in her constant aid and counsel, but also in her creation of the external conditions conducive to the completion of the work; to my former teachers and present colleagues in the Department of Philosophy of Columbia University, Herbert W. Schneider and Horace L. Friess, whose encouragement and criticism have helped to shape my interest in the place of religion in the social pattern of American life; to many others of my colleagues on whose special researches I have drawn for the background of these documents; to Fay Hanson, who helped to prepare the manuscript; and to the staff of the Columbia University Library, who have been generous in giving their time and their expert knowledge of the sources. In thanking all of these my friends, I do not intend to suggest that they share the responsibility for any mistakes in fact or errors in interpretation; any such slips are on my own head alone.

Much of the material incorporated into the latter part of the Introduction was brought to my attention by Edwin H. Wilson invaluable feature, The Sectarian Battlefront, which appears regularly in The Humanist. I hope Mr. Wilson will approve of the use to which I have put his data. In sections of the Introduction and of some of the interpretations, I have drawn upon articles which I have written at various times for The Review of Religion. My discussion of the Moulton-Myers report in the text is a condensation of a discussion which I prepared for the Columbia University Seminar on Religion and Democracy, and owes much to the friendly opposition and stimulating criticism which I received from the members of that group.
