This book is exactly what it seems, not more, not less. It is an attempt to face the realities of the European war from the view point of the United States and its future. The contributors come from all walks of American life. They are men and women who have attained some distinction in education, in business, in public affairs, in religious leadership, and in the newspaper work. They come from all sections of life in this country and they were born in all regions. They represent differing degrees of academic equipment; they speak for many groups and callings.

When they were asked to contribute to this book they had no instructions and no limitations were placed upon their views. Their contributions have been printed herewith without editorial change of any kind. It is of more than passing significance to note that this group drawn from so many places and representing so many diverse interests in our American life should be of one mind about the danger which threatens modern civilization and particularly civilization in the United States.
