Excerpt

In recent years it has been growing increasingly evident that America is drawing toward the end of her long, necessary period of musical childhood and timid dependence on Europe, that she is even now in the somewhat awkward self-conscious stage of adolescence, and that before long she will be musically adult. Evidence of her slowly reached maturity is to be found all about us: quantitatively in the large new public that has been made aware of serious music by modern inventions; qualitatively and more significantly in the growing interest taken in the work of our own composers, especially by our provincial orchestras it is true, but latterly also by the rather more snobbish metropolitan orchestras and even by Europe itself. Solid documentation for this movement of taste may be found in the epoch-marking address A Forward Look in American Composition delivered by Dr.
