The increasing interest in American literature is indicated by the increasing number of books written about it. Histories of American Literature are published every year; and critics, in Europe and in America, seem to be more and more drawn to the study of individual American writers. There are still those who profess to believe that all American literature is second-rate; but the influence of some American authors is as wide as the world, and seems not to be diminishing.
