"Backgrounds, seen with clear eye and appraised with sense, give bearings for the leagues to come."

QUIETLY and blindly and without appreciation of the social implications, the engineer, by harnessing the energy in our natural resources, has unleashed new forces which started the world's worst economic muddle. The pathetic unawareness of the engineer of the social changes he has set in motion, the spiritual unpreparedness of religious leaders to supply proper Living-Together motives, the inertia of lawyers in adjusting their lagging law-thinking to a rapidly moving social order, the lack of understanding of business men of the social consequences of their own business processes, and the bewildered and confused educators, isolated from reality and groping in an atmosphere of illusion--these have brought society to the most serious crisis in man's long slow ascent. All of us together have contributed to today's muddle. All of us together should work our way out.

Joining the ideas of "Living" and "Together" symbolizes the new needed motif. We need a Living-Together philosophy, resting on the wise use of what the engineer has made possible, and an understanding of human welfare and the will to make this the sole justification of our economic activities.

Power -- which is the rate of doing work -- and not the machine is the new idea in today's economic muddle. Man has long been using simple machines operated by muscle. The big idea today is the use of power from fuel and falling water where muscle was formerly used. This created the Power Age.
