A Short History of Chinese Art

Excerpt

This book makes an attempt to give a concise and yet complete account of the history of Chinese art, based upon the latest scholarly information but at the same time written for the layman rather than the specialist. In writing it, the author has drawn upon many sources and hereby gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to his colleagues, many of whose works are listed in the bibliography. Above all, he has drawn upon the work of the three outstanding Swedish scholars, J. G. Andersson, B. Karlgren and O. Siren, who have done so much to increase our knowledge of Chinese art.

The author also wishes to express his gratitude to the museum curators and private collectors who permitted him to reproduce objects in their collections. They are Mr. Robert Paine of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Mr. Langdon Warner of the Fogg Museum, Mr. John Pope of the Freer Gallery of Art, Mr. Laurance Sickman of William Rockhill Nelson Gallery, Professor Norman Brown of the University Museum in Philadelphia, Mrs. Nicholas Brown of Providence, R. I., Mr. Charles B. Hoyt of Cambridge, Mass., Mr. Adrian Larkin of New York City and Mr. C. T. Loo of New York City and Paris. He also wishes to thank Mr. Langdon Warner for his courtesy in letting him use photographs taken at Tun Huang, and Mr. Edward H. Brown for his help in selecting and securing photographs, and above all, the Michigan State College Press for generously aiding this publication.
