On Veterans Day, 1984, I went to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for the first time. The first thing that struck me about it was its placement: It is within sight of the Washington Monument, where hundreds of thousands of us gathered to protest the war almost a generation ago. You can see them both in one glance--what a postcard!--so that the memorial could almost be a shadow cast by the strict white finger of the monument, or a black scar burned into the ground. The thousands of people filing in and out of it on this day are slow and silent, in contrast to the shouting, chanting mobs of the past.
