Before turning to the great playwrights of the past-- the recent past--who are the chief subject of this book, it may be advisable to bring to mind the current state of the theater. If the past often helps us to understand the present, it is the present which establishes our historical perspective. The present is every historian's point of departure. But the trouble with the present is that we know too much about it--or think we do. There is the danger of spending so much time on the point of departure that we never actually depart. We are thus bound to select infinitely fewer facts than we leave out. With the limitations of such a proceeding in mind, I propose to establish a point of departure by commenting briefly on a few current plays, some of which have been successful on Broadway, and all . . .
