Homosexuality would certainly be an easier subject to describe and to analyze if it were confined to the people who practice it. But it is more than a brand of behavior that can be viewed at the level of choice or of some personal imperative. Much like heterosexuality--its mirror image in a way--it has extensive biological and sociological implications. And it has a whole history of consequences in religion, philosophy, and science. To trace these roots and to follow its repercussions through this maze--in short, to draw a picture not only of homosexuality but of its social matrix --has been the aim of this study from the start.

And yet despite my own previous work as a sex researcher and psychologist, and much help from some of the best minds in both fields, this project has taken more than ten years. It was necessary to sort out the issues, to go after special sources of information, and in the process, to stay as empirical and inductive as possible rather than reaching hasty deductive conclusions. How pleasant it would be to be able to say that all this time was spent in an orderly carrying out of various procedures that were fully planned from the beginning. But in practice, one encounters many sidetracks in sex research, some of which have to be explored immediately before another step can be taken. Other times, one must visit and revisit a particular milieu to catch its flavor, to recheck early impressions, or to travel some entirely new avenue that appeared on no map before. Such things as building rapport with a new group, gathering special samples, and making innumerable observations may all move very rapidly; but it is sometimes quite another matter to "make sense" of the results or to . . .
