This volume gives the substance of lectures delivered at Brown University in connection with the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the university's foundation. The lectures as delivered were somewhat amplified for publication, and were annotated with some freedom.

The present edition, issued in response to demand from various quarters, is a reprint, with no change beyond a few additional annotations, of the first edition (1915). It had been my hope to take up the subject more fully, but other matters have absorbed my time and strength. I am compelled to ask the reader again to bear in mind what was said in the preface of the first edition, -- that there is no pretense of dealing with all the relations between economics and psychology. The little volume is meant chiefly to arouse interest in the important topics that lie on . . .
